Gastroscopy

We use a flexible fiber-optic scope that is passed through the nose and is long enough to go all the way to the stomach. This allows us to visualize gastroscopythe internal lining to determine if your horses have stomach ulcers. Typically, this procedure was only available at the local hospitals. We now have a portable video gastroscope, which allows us to scope your horse at your barn, see the results on a monitor and receive a CD copy of the exam. Indications that your horse may have stomach ulcers and require gastroscopy include: backing away from food at feeding times, grinding teeth, excess salivation, “girthy” or “cinchy” , ill thrift, not gaining weight, poor hair coat, or overall grumpy behavior. Please call to schedule an appointment today. Horses will have to be off food for 12-14 hours and off water for 4-6 hours prior to scoping.

Endoscopy

We use the flexible endoscope to diagnose and evaluate numerous nose, throat, and respiratory problems. The flexible endoscope has a camera chip at the end of a long, narrow tube, which allows for the visualization of certain conditions without invasive exploratory surgery. It is also useful for taking samples of the fluid in the trachea, lungs, or guttural pouches for diagnostic purposes.
