Acupuncture has its roots in China as a method of health care for thousands of years. It is now being used throughout the world and has become increasingly popular in the United States for a variety of ailments. It is recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association as a safe and effective treatment for animals. Acupuncture can be an excellent complement to Western Medicine for providing additional pain relief for chronic and acute conditions.

Acupuncture points are areas on the body that are rich in nerves and blood vessels. When the needle is inserted into these points various neurotransmitters are released which travel to the central nervous system. These neurotransmitters have a role in modifying pain, inflammation and muscle tension in the target areas. Acupuncture is a very safe treatment modality and very few negative side effects have been reported.

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of conditions including:

  • Neck, Back, Sacroiliac pain
  • Forelimb and hindlimb lameness
  • Decreased performance
  • Allergies/hives
  • Facial, radial, and suprascapular nerve paralysis
  • Fertility issues
  • Chronic colic/GI disturbances
  • Laminitis

Acupuncture needles are very thin and sterile. The needle may be felt as it passes through the skin as a slight pin prick. Once the needle is through the skin the area may develop a tingling sensation, numbness, warm feeling, or a mild cramping sensation. Needles are left in place anywhere from 5- 30 minutes depending on the area being treated. Certain horses react differently to acupuncture depending on their personality and level of pain. Some may relax and become sleepy while others may become excited. Depending on the nature of the condition some horses will show improvement after the first treatment while others will need 3-4 treatments to see improvement. For horses in athletic training acupuncture treatments can vary from once a week to once a month depending on their level/intensity of training.
